In many ways the town of Black Mountain owes its existence to hiking, when in the late 1800s a new rail line was completed and the area became a tourist gateway for exploring Mount Mitchell and the surrounding mountains. Today, the 5.5 mile Mount Mitchell hike remains one of the most popular hikes in the area, but there are hundreds of others to choose from including an easy “digestive stroll” around the lighted trail at Lake Tomahawk to the challenging 12-hike Swannanoa Rim Explorer™ series sponsored by the Swannanoa Valley Museum. The Swannanoa Valley Museum also offers hikes every month, or Sue and Barney can put you in touch with a local hiking guide. There are lots of other opportunities to enjoy the outdoors including golf, fly fishing, river rafting and horseback riding. Or for a less strenuous outdoor experience, driving along the Blue Ridge Parkway is hard to beat!
